Why we do what we do

In England and Wales, we have the highest suicide rates since 1999 and the highest female rates since 1994.

  • 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.
  • 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England.
  • More than 1 in 7 UK adults say their mental health is currently either bad, or the worst it’s ever been.
  • More women than men are currently struggling with poor mental health (18.5% of women vs 12.5% of men).
  • Young people, aged 16-24 are the most affected by mental health struggles, with nearly a quarter (23.5%) describing their mental health as either bad or the worst it’s ever been.
  • In 2023, NHS England spent £217.5 million on medication to treat depression and anxiety.
  • Total NHS spend on medications used to treat anxiety and depression was highest at the start of the pandemic, though, with the total spend for 2020 being £346.4 million.
  • More antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication are dispensed in the North East and North Cumbria than any other part of England.
  • In the UK in 2024, the term ‘How to reduce stress’ is searched on Google once every 10 minutes, on average.

Men's pie club

WHAT IS IT?

Men’s Pie Club is a weekly get together for men to make a pie, chat to other guys, make new friends, laugh and maybe learn a thing or two. MPC is a club, not a course, so there’s no good with us, start or end date or expected commitment to attend every week. Clubs have up to 10 participants week to week. There is always a warm welcome, the only thing Pie Men need to bring is a little bit of enthusiasm and a willingness to be part of a team where everyone supports each other.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Not a penny... All your equipment and ingredients are free, and you get to take your freshly baked pie home with you (or eat it there and then if you wish).

Men's pie club

WHAT IF I CAN’T COOK?
You don’t need any cooking skills, but we’ll teach you one or two if you fancy it.

CAN ANYONE JOIN?
Yes. We’re open to any men who want to come and give Pie Club a go. If you want to bring a mate with you, that’s good with us.

Betsy Jenny Counselling and Wellbeing cafe- Testimonal - Lesley

"I came upon this cafe completely by chance. I had a friend staying with me from the Midlands and took her to Sunderland for the day and found this Café in the city centre. I was very impressed with the warm and friendly welcome we received and the choice of food at reasonable prices. The Café is run by staff and volunteers, who are all friendly and helpful. We were shown around and I was impressed by the services offered.

One in four adults experience mental health problems at some time in their life. This can be something quite mild to much more serious and long-term issues. The staff and volunteers work alongside professionals and charities to support people in need. The support is offered in various ways ranging from individual counselling, women's groups, men's pie club, a library, financial advice and advocacy, arts and craft, as well as sound bath medication to name a few of the groups and services on offer. One of the most important services offered is that of companionship. There is always at least one volunteer or member of staff who will sit and chat to you if you need a little company. This is particularly welcoming for people who live alone and may be desperate to see a friendly face and to have someone listen to them whether they have worries, need to know where to go for appropriate advice about an issue or simply just to talk."

Sound Bath and Meditation Group

"I was very interested to attend the sound bath and meditation group, which was offered free of charge due to lottery funding. A sound bath and meditation session has been proved to have many health benefits, This includes reducing stress, tension and anxiety, improving sleep quality, reducing blood pressure and heart rate and giving an increased sense of well being. The session starts with people lying on the mats provided, although people with reduced mobility can still take part by sitting in a chair.

Relaxing music forms a background for the session which starts with deep breathing. We listen to the instructor telling us to breathe deeply whilst emptying our minds of thoughts. We are told that if thoughts or noises start to intrude to simply put them to one side. Then begins the sound bath music. Various instruments are used including various sizes of crystal singing bowls, gongs, chimes, rattles, rain sticks and rain drums.

The sounds these instruments make create an unbelievable magical out of this world sound. They resonate around the room and fill the room with vibrations. Instantly, I personally begin to feel all the stress and tension melting away as i am transported to a level of great peacefulness. I enjoy all the musical sounds as they drift from ear to ear, washing over my body. We are then brought back by the instructor as he gently brings us back into the room, into this reality, as we lie for a few more minutes stretching and opening our eyes, ready to get on with whatever life has to give us, feeling much less stressed and calmer than before the session.

I have heard people say that they couldn't manage to meditate as their minds are constantly going from one thing to another; what to cook for tea, what bills to pay, worry about illnesses, worry about health, worry, worry, worry. These people in particular would benefit from attending these sessions. It is so wonderful to take only one hour out of the 168 hours in a week, just to have a little bit of quality 'me time' and to benefit from the possible mental and physical health benefits."
